A memorable family outing can take many forms and with two free days at the weekend, it’s always nice to get out and about and spend quality time with the little ones.

Donabate has everything you need for an unforgettable day out with the family and here’s why.

1. Sandy beaches

A sandy beach is ideal for a day out with the family. Balcarrick in Donabate is a 3km stretch of golden sand that is a 20-minute walk from the train station, and Portrane, a 2km shell-filled crescent is three miles from Donabate – both awarded blue flag satatus.

Perfect for kids to play around and is especially enjoyable on a sunny day and there is some lovely scenery along the coast.

2. Newbridge House & Farm

This place is worth a visit at any time of the year – it’s great for walks and its pet farm is a big plus for children.

Kids are usually impressed by the Georgian house and 18th century farm, an adventure children’s playground, woodland walks, a deer park and homemade treats in the tea room. The farm has a  variety of animals including piglets, goats, chicks, sheep, horses and many more animals with lots of free space to run around.

3. Pay a visit to Howth

On a nice day this is almost unbeatable.

Enjoy a stroll along Howth Harbour where tour boats make regular trips to Ireland’s Eye throughout the day and let the children feed the seals with fish from local shops.

4. A boat trip to Ireland’s Eye

Take the Ireland’s Eye Ferry from East Pier in Howth to Ireland’s Eye where you can explore this picturesque island with its many different species of birds, the ruins of St Nessan’s Church and take a picnic on the beautiful beaches.

5. Trekking along the rugged coast of Dublin Bay

Trekking through acres of fields and woodlands or enjoy a breathtaking beach ride on the nearby strand situated directly opposite the farm.
